For today's International Cultural Exchange (ICE), we had fun
learning some fun facts about Germany from Ryan, a 16-year old exchange student
from HWHS. He touched on the world-renowned church, castle,
museum, Oktoberfest, Schloss Neuschwanstein, and so on.
Ryan speaks fluent German and English. His presentations were
well-organized, with effective use of visual aids. My students came across
difficult words from time to time, so I stepped in and translated for them when
necessary. The most shocking to me was that it'd be legal to drink beer when
you hit 16 in Germany.
Four of my students also did a simple presentation about things
you can do at Taichung Train Station. There's still a lot of room for
improvement though, and they'll get better with more opportunities like this.
The idea is all about helping my students feel the need for speaking English
and learn to appreciate cultural differences.
Ryan's host dad is a colleague of mine. When he talked about the host family program, I felt the speak in his eyes. The family lived up to the reputation for being super nice and friendly Taiwanese, and they even already planned on a trip to Germany next year.
