Task Based Learning Workshop

Getting Inspired Once Again towards TBL and its Lesson Planning

I attended the Task-Based Learning workshop held by the Ministry of Education and British Council Taiwan for the first time over two years ago and already have done many teaching demonstrations, English camps, and Skype exchange projects with principles and techniques learned from this brilliant English teaching approach since then. However, as soon as I learned about there would be a five-day TBL workshop this week by the very same lecturer, I immediately decided to sign up for the THIRD time and enjoyed every class of it.

Classroom Language and Task Based Learning

This is actually the second time that I attended the TBL workshop by the British Council. The first one helped me a lot understand how the ideas and techniques of this communicative approach take shape in the real worldIt’s really good I can refresh my memory and also gain new perspectives in terms of TBL, especially I know I’m on the right track after briefly talking about one of my TBL lesson plans with the Director English, Jamie. Also, he kindly offered some very useful suggestions of differentiating some of the activities in the main tasks :

Teaching Demonstrations for Pre-service Teachers: Task-based Learning

南一書局 英語文領域新綱特刊 Vol. 2

Today's teaching demonstration served a dual purpose. One was to help promote Task-based Learning with not only the lesson plan but actual execution in a class. The other was to discuss how to deliver a good 15-minute teaching demonstration to stand out in that extremely fierce competition.

British Council TaiwanTask-Based Learning Certificate: Lesson Planning and Microteaching

"This is actually the third TBL workshops I've attended. Ever since the first one, I started putting what I learned into practice and did many teaching demonstrations within and outside of my school. On top of that, I'm an English teacher who loves to create an authentic environment for my students to really use the language. I've conducted several Skype exchange projects with my partners outside of Taiwan. As shown this morning, we began making English videos to introduce the beauty of Taichung with this lesson plan and its tasks. It works like magic."

Teaching Demonstration Filming Project: English reading activities

I always search for ideas and techniques from Task Based Learning and Backward Design when planning my lessons for teaching demonstrations. With a series of reading activities, students actively and collaboratively experienced how their comprehension of the reading passage can be improved by completing the pre, main and post tasks based on TBL.

On top of that, Backward Design focuses beginning with the end, meaning you start lesson planning by determining the desired outcomes first. Following that, you then look for activities to help equip students with what they need to perform the next one. In other words, Because my students have effective scaffolding beforehand, I want them to run out of excuses not to be able to complete the tasks.

Microteaching with TBL and Reading Strategies at NSJH

This time, I worked even harder on reading up as much as I can about reading strategies and putting all the resources together in order to create a complete lesson plan of microteaching mainly targeting important skills that help bolster reading comprehension. Once again, I feel thankful for the opportunity to not only benefit the participants of the workshop but more importantly, myself, in terms of self-growth.

It is my honor and pleasure today to film for the “Teaching Demonstration Project” with the National Changhua University of Education. The idea is to demonstrate some innovative teaching strategies targeting reading and grammar in textbooks for all the junior high English teachers. On top of that, it is also my privilege to work with those lovely students in雅心書軒for the very first time after its unveiling ceremony at PHJH.
