Lesson Planning with Intercultural Communication and Critical Thinking

Unit 6: Lesson Planning
1. Overview description of your students (how many, age, language level, and purposes for studying English)

As a junior high English teacher here in Taiwan, I teach three classes, including a normal class of 28 students, a gifted class of 2, and the International Cultural Exchange Club of 18 this school year. There is a huge gap between their English levels. With the normal class, my main concern is to make sure I’ve covered everything in the textbooks, while the other two classes allow me much more freedom to create more challenging tasks, such as Skype sessions, making English-speaking videos, and so on. Therefore, the purposes of studying English for these two approaches also differ significantly from each other.

2. What aspect(s) of critical thinking does this lesson work on?

Of all the critical thinking skills mentioned in the previous lessons, I'd like to choose "Description & Interpretation" for the main target objective of my lesson plan. Students nowadays are constantly overwhelmed with loads of information from social media. Being able to distinguish facts and opinions is becoming more and more important.

2017 MOE Principal Instructional Leadership Workshop

Developing interdisciplinary and custom-made learning materials aiming for reading comprehension and real application
It was completely my honor to be assigned and take on this huge task, with a group of principals and professors observing throughout the entire class. On top of that,
in order to demonstrate interdisciplinary collaborations for future workshops, I also worked closely with the students' homeroom teacher, who teaches Scouting Activity, and developed custom-made reading materials to depict the host school's camping trip next month.

British Council TaiwanTask-Based Learning Certificate: Lesson Planning and Microteaching

"This is actually the third TBL workshops I've attended. Ever since the first one, I started putting what I learned into practice and did many teaching demonstrations within and outside of my school. On top of that, I'm an English teacher who loves to create an authentic environment for my students to really use the language. I've conducted several Skype exchange projects with my partners outside of Taiwan. As shown this morning, we began making English videos to introduce the beauty of Taichung with this lesson plan and its tasks. It works like magic."

Task Based Learning Workshop

Getting Inspired Once Again towards TBL and its Lesson Planning

I attended the Task-Based Learning workshop held by the Ministry of Education and British Council Taiwan for the first time over two years ago and already have done many teaching demonstrations, English camps, and Skype exchange projects with principles and techniques learned from this brilliant English teaching approach since then. However, as soon as I learned about there would be a five-day TBL workshop this week by the very same lecturer, I immediately decided to sign up for the THIRD time and enjoyed every class of it.

How to Conduct International Video Conferencing in the Classroom

Engaging the teachers with a live video call, lesson planning strategies, and a hands-on experience with Skype settings

The main idea for this workshop is to show the teachers how to conduct a Skype exchange session in the classroom. The purpose is for students to experience how to communicate in the language with their neighboring Asian counterparts or English-speaking teachers on Skype.

Integrating Critical Thinking Skills into the Exploration of Culture in an EFL Setting

Week 1: Orientation; Culture
Unit 1: Let's Introduce Ourselves
My name is Li Guo-jhen. You can call me Guo Jhen. I'm from Taiwan and live in the third largest city, Taichung. I've been teaching in a public junior high school as an English teacher for more than 13 years. My students are ranging from 13 to 15 years old. Even though most Taiwanese students begin learning English officially in the first or second year of elementary school, I think their level is in between A2 and B1, based on CEFR standard (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).

Also, I am a member of the English Advisory Team of Taichung. We organize workshops for all the junior high English teachers, so I have plenty of opportunities to attend and also share at workshops for English teaching. Also, I've applied for E-Teacher programs twice. Last summer, I got accepted into 2017 Intensive Sessions/Camps Exchange Program and had a wonderful chance to learn about how summer camps are run in the States.

Collaborative Lesson Planning with Akiko and Bettie

Akiko, BettieGuo-jhen

Ever since Akiko and I determined to make this international video conferencing happen regardless of all the hurdles ahead of us this September, we have been doing “collaborative lesson planning” through Skype many times. Besides our passion and dedication to this project, the idea is that we need to come up with workable lesson plans, worksheets and other materials to meet the goal of effective communication between both sides.

Bringing the World into the Classroom

Sharing project ideas of international education with native English-speaking teachers of New Taipei City

I was absolutely excited as well as nervous to share my greatest passion for English teaching with over thirty native speakers at Jiangcui Junior High School. It put not only my English speaking but presentation skills to the test. Of course, I still made some minor mistakes, but based on their anonymous feedback, I was also proud that I nailed it as a presenter whose first language is not English.
