Getting
students to introduce the beautiful campus in English with Zoom conferencing
and OBS video making
With engaging
tasks for brainstorming, discussion, and ranking, I got those bright students
to write a paragraph about a spot they chose, including the vegetable garden,
playground, and a school building.
They then went out
to take photos and record videos in those spots with their cellphones. Through
a video call on Zoom, students practiced presenting their topics to my friend
in Canada. Finally, they worked in groups to do voice-overs and completed three
short English speaking videos. The followings are the ABCD learning objectives for each task:
1. TBL Tasks
With a series of
connected tasks, students can incorporate history, location, activities,
feelings, and characteristics in their paragraph writing.
2. Group Writing
With the two-step
writing worksheet, students working in pairs can finish their assigned parts
and a complete paragraph with at least twelve sentences.
3. Photo Taking
With the photos
and videos taken at each venue, students can upload them to an online
group.
4. International Video Conferencing
With the scripts
ready, students can present their topics with the screen feature to an English
speaking volunteer on Zoom.
5. OBS Recording
With an external
webcam and microphone, students can record their presentations with the screen
recording software.
I enjoy watching
students working collaboratively on tasks and use the language in a meaningful
context. With a course like this, they get to feel the importance of basic
English speaking skills when talking with a foreigner on Skype or Zoom. Also,
teaching students outside of my school is challenging, but I think I'm pretty
good at it. This truly brings feelings of achievement to my job, for not many
are confident or capable of conducting a class like this.
